Volmarr’s Norse-Wicca Solitary Ritual Outline May-5-2019
Freyja and Freyr Version

Need:
• Wine
• Water in the water bowl
• Salt in the salt bowl
• offering bowl
• Incense
• candles
• Thor’s Ritual Hammer (optional, can use it for the Hammer Hallowings)
• a representation of Freyja
• A representation of Freyr
• Cakes or cookies

Cleansing Ritual Space

Hold athame. Move to the center of the ritual space. Caste an earth banishing pentacle to the center of the space.

“I exorcise this place, that nothing malignant be found herein. Let it be free of all evil and be cleansed and purified. In the names of Freyr and Freyja I cast forth all spirits both seen and unseen from this place.”

Put down athame in altar. Take up the broom.

“As I sweep ‘cross this ground
let no evil here be found.
As I walk the spiral path,
let all evil flee my wrath.
As this broom sweeps round this place,
let it now be sacred space.”

Use the broom to ritually sweep the energies clear of the ritual space. Once all the space is swept clear:

“Freyr and Freyja hear my plea,
that this place from all evil shall be free.
Make of it thy sacred home,
blessed in every leaf and stone.
In all thy names I call to thee,
As I will, so mote it be!”

Now set up the ritual space for the ritual. Be sure to make sure all needed items are preset. Be sure to get ready in any ways needed. Make sure any needed candles are there. Be sure any needed incense is there. Put the cauldron in the center of the circle space if that is needed for the ritual.

Do the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hammer, without the rune-ring.

Stand before the altar. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and center your thoughts on the upcoming ritual and the reason behind it. Ring the bell once and say:

“This ritual has begun.”

Lighting Of The Candles

Light the Presence Candle (a white taper candle).

“I light this Candle (lights Presence Lamp)
in the name of that ancient presence,
which is, was, and ever shall be
male, female, all-knowing, all-powerful
and present everywhere.

And in the names of the four Mighty Ones,
the rulers of the elements,
may power and blessing descend
in this hour upon this place
and those gathered here.”

Light the Goddess and God candles, the altar red fire candle, the incense charcoal (if being used), and the four quarter candles from the Presence Lamp.

Light all other candles, minus any spell candles.

Light all deity tea-lights or deity candles.

Blessing of the Water

Place water bowl on pentacle.

“I exorcise thee, O Creature of Water, that thou cast out from thee all the impurity and uncleanliness of the world of phantasm. In the names of Freyr and Freyja.”

Pick up water bowl with both hand and hold it in front of you while visualizing your energy extending to purify the water.

Blessing of the Salt

Place salt bowl on pentacle.

“Blessings be upon thee, O Creature of Salt; let all malignity and hindrance be cast forth from thee, and let all good enter within. Wherefore do I bless and consecrate thee, that thou mayest aid me. In the names of Freyr and Freyja.”

Pick up salt bowl with both hand and hold it in front of you while visualizing your energy extending to purify the salt.

Put water bowl on pentacle. Pour all salt into the water.

Put the water bowl to the side.

Casting the Circle

Hold athame and move to northern part of circle.

“I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, that thou beest a boundary between the world of men and the realms of the Mighty Ones; a meeting place of love and joy and truth; a shield against all wickedness and evil; a rampart and protection that shall preserve and contain the power that I raise within thee. Wherefore do I bless thee, and consecrate thee, in the names of Freyr and Freyja.”

From northern edge of the ritual area, holding your dagger in your power hand. Visualize a blue-white flame issuing from the tip of the dagger. Point it at the floor in the East. Walk clockwise or deosil around the circle three times, drawing the circle mark in the air as you go. Be sure to overlap the ends in the North as you finish.

Take hold of the water bowl. Move to the north of the circle.

“Salt and water, by casting thee,
let no spell, or unknown purpose be,
except in true court with me,
and as I will, so mote it be.”

Using the fingers of your power hand, lightly sprinkle the water around the edge of the circle, beginning and ending in the North.

Splash self with the water.

Replace the water bowl on the altar.

Light the incense using the Presence candle. Hold the incense. Move to the north of the circle.

“As this oily essence bear,
lends it’s great strength unto the air.
Attracting spirits of the light,
guardians, both day and night.
This charge is true in prophecy,
and as I will, so mote it be.”

Carry the burning incense around the circle, beginning and ending in the North. Return the incense to the altar.

Smudge self with the incense.

Hold the fire candle. Move to the north of the circle.

“Creature of Fire, this charge I give,
no evil in our presence lives.
No spooks, or phantoms may stay,
Not around this place, not night, not day,
This charge is true in prophecy,
and as I will, so mote it be.”

Carry the red altar fire candle around the circle, beginning and ending in the North. Return the candle to the altar.

Take hold of the water bowl. Sprinkle the salt water over the altar.

“Elementals, Spirits, Gods of Old,
this altar fresh you now behold.
You all agree that it’s bound to me.
In peace and true serenity,
this place is perfect harmony,
and as I will, so mote it be.”

Calling the Watchtowers

Ring bell.

With athame trace three circles and the make an air invoking pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the East, Lords of the Air, I summon and call you to witness my rites and to guard this sacred Circle.”

Poke center of pentacle to activate the Watchtower gate. See in mind’s eye the pentacle light up.

With athame trace three circles and the make a fire invoking pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the South, Lords of Fire, I summon and call you up to witness my rites and to guard this sacred Circle.”

Poke center of pentacle to activate the Watchtower gate. See in mind’s eye the pentacle light up.

With athame trace three circles and the make a water invoking pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the West, Lords of Water, Lords of Death and Initiation, I summon and call you up to witness my rites and to guard this sacred Circle.”

Poke center of pentacle to activate the Watchtower gate. See in mind’s eye the pentacle light up.

With athame trace three circles and the make an Earth invoking pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the North, Lords of the Earth, guardian of the Northern Portals, powerful God and gentle Goddess, I summon and call you to witness my rites and to guard this sacred Circle.”

Poke center of pentacle to activate the Watchtower gate. See in mind’s eye the pentacle light up.

Invoking the Ancient Ones

Face north. Make the Goddess position.

“Lovely Freyja, I call you into my Circle
to aid me in my rites tonight and
so I may caste magick to work my will.
Hail and welcome lovely Freyja!”

“Hail Freyja! Daughter of Njord. Sister of Freyr. Descendant of the Vanir. Possessor of Brisingamen. Od’s wife. Vanir-bride. Teacher of seidh. Love goddess. Gold-thirsty one. Queen of witches!

Hail Freyja!”

See Freyja standing before me naked, save only a short cloak of magickal hawk feathers and a jeweled necklace that radiates power. Her hair long and wild and golden red. Her pale blue eyes that are like the oceans. Her body most pleasing feminine shape. Her pale skin glows with life. She breath with longing. Her body moves with the grace of a cat. See her full round breasts and dark pink erect nipples. Gauze your eyes upon her sensuous curves. Her legs long and strong. See her feet, her toes curling into the soft earth. Enjoy the view of her perfectly round and toned bottom. Look between her thighs and see the dew glistening from her sex and feel the intense fires which burn there. Look upon her. Feast your eyes upon her beauty. Feel the excitement she invoke in me. Hear her sultry voice whisper to you to discover her innermost mysteries.

Take some deep breaths now and close your eyes and spend some time meditating on her form and energy.

“Freyja,

you charge that I seek pleasure and beauty bright,
Please lend your energies to my rite,
and take root as a guiding presence in my days and nights,
so I may learn your ways and be filled with your light.
Hail Freyja, lovely Goddess greatly desired within my sight!”

Face north. Make the God position.

“Mighty Freyr, I call you into my Circle
to aid me in my rites tonight and
so I may caste magick to work my will.
Hail and welcome mighty Freyr!”

“Hail Freyr! Son of Njord. Brother of Freyja. Husband of Gerd. Trusted friend of Skirnir. Descendant of the Vanir. Harvest god and wealth-giver. King of Alfheim. Blot-god of the Swedes. Possessor of Skidbladnir, and the boar known as Gullinbursti. Beli’s slayer. Enemy of Surtr. Wielder of the stag-horn. Fruitful one. Sure giver. Father of the Yngling line. Lord of the Volsi!

Hail Freyr!”

See Freyr standing before you. He is completely naked, and has a raging hardon. He is very handsome, and seems Earthy, but regal. He is a young man that seems filled with life and vitality. He glows with the power of prosperity and well-being. He seems very friendly and welcoming. He carries a stag horn. In his other hand he has a tiny model Viking ship, but there is some strange magick coming from the model, it feels like it could somehow become the size of a massive life size ship. He has medium long sandy blond hair, and a beard.

He smiles to his sister Freyja and embraces her, and then gives her a very sensual kiss on the lips. You can sense a strong sexual charge between them both. They both smile at one another and then smile back at me. Freyja winks at me. Freyr pats me on the shoulder in a friendly way, and then gives me a warm friendly hug. Freyja then leans in and embraces me and her lips meet mine in a very sexual intense kiss. Both of them now stand in the circle, ready to help with my ritual.

Take some deep breaths now and close your eyes and spend some time meditating on his form and energy.

“Freyr,
you charge that I live life with joy and energy bright.
Please lend your energies to my rite,
and take root as a guiding presence in my days and nights,
so I may learn your ways and be filled with your light.
Hail Freyr, powerful God of vitality and might!”

Self-Blessing

Anoint yourself with ritual oil in the places indicated while saying the following:

“Blessed be my feet that walk in the ways of the Goddess.
Blessed be my sex, creative power of life.
Blessed be my breasts formed in strength.
Blessed be my heart that I feel compassion for all who are living.
Blessed be my mouth that speaks the sacred names.
Blessed be my eyes that behold the beauty of Nature.”

Finally anoint yourself in the center of your forehead:

Blessed be my inner sight that I may receive a message within my soul.

Bless me, my Lady Freyja, that I may see
You truly, so I may see all things

of the world of spirit
In love and trust, so mote it be.”

Charge of the Goddess

Best is to listen to a recording of the charge while meditating on the form of the Goddess that has been invoked in the ritual, and feel her energy.

“Listen to the words of the Great Mother who was of old also called among men, Freyja, Artemis, Astarte, Diana, Saga, Idunn, Aphrodite, Skadi, Laxmi, Frigga, Parvati, Gerd, Cerridwen, Lalita, Eir, Arianrod, Sif, Kali, Saraswati, Hel, and by many other names.

Whenever ye have need of anything, once in a month, and better it be when the Moon be full, then ye shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all Witcheries.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not yet won its deepest secrets: to these will I teach things that are yet unknown.

And ye shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that ye are really free, ye shall be naked in your rites; and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in my praise.

For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and mine also is joy on earth; for my Law is Love unto all Beings.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever toward it; let naught stop you or turn you aside.

For mine is the secret door which opens upon the Land of Youth; and mine is the Cup of the Wine of Life, and the Cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of Immortality.

I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart. Upon earth, I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace, and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand sacrifice, for behold I am the Mother of All Living, and my love is poured out upon the earth.

Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess, she in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven; whose body encircleth the Universe; I, who am the beauty of the green earth, and the white Moon among the stars, and the mystery of the waters, and the heart’s desire, call unto thy soul. Arise and come unto me.

For I am the Soul of Nature, who giveth life to the universe; from me all things proceed, and unto me must all things return; and before my face, beloved of gods and mortals, thine inmost divine self shall be unfolded in the rapture of infinite joy.

Let my worship be within the heart that rejoiceth, for behold: all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

And thou who thinkest to seek for me, know thy seeking and yearning shall avail thee not, unless thou know this mystery: that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without thee.

For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning; and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.”

Charge of the God

Get into God position and meditate on the Sun, feeling the energy of the Sun descending into you. Feel the energy of the God fill you.

“Listen to the words of the Great Father, who of old was called among men, Freyr, Osiris, Adonis, Zeus, Thor, Pan, Bragi, Cernunnos, Odin, Ganesh, Tyr, Shiva, Heimdall, Vishnu, Njord, Krishna, Baldr, Lugh, Mimir, Narayana, Ullr, Buddha, and by many other names.

I am the radiant King of the Heavens,
flooding the Earth with warmth and encouraging the hidden
seed of creation to burst forth into manifestation.

I lift my shining sword to light the lives of all beings
and daily pour forth my golden rays upon the Earth,
putting to flight the powers of darkness.

I am the spirit of all beasts wild and free.
I run with the stag and soar as a sacred falcon against
the shimmering sky.

The ancient woods and wild places emanate my powers,
the birds of the air sing of my sanctity.

I am the harvest, offering up grain and fruits beneath
the sickle of time so that all may be nourished.
For without planting there can be no harvest;
without winter there can be no spring.

I am the thousand named Son of creation.
Know that by all names I am the same.

The spirit of the horned stag in the wild, the endless harvest.
See in the yearly cycle of festivals my birth, death and
rebirth and know that such is the destiny of all creation..

I am the spark of life, the radiant Sun, the giver of peace and rest.
I send my rays of blessings to warm the hearts and strengthen the minds of all.”

Great Rite

If doing as symbolic: Set the chalice of wine on the pentacle. Take the athame and hold over the wine/juice, but without it touching the liquid inside.

If doing it as masturbation be touching self during this.

“Now I must reveal a great Mystery.

Assist me to erect the Ancient Altar, at which in days past all worshipped, the Great Altar of all things. For in the old times a woman was the Altar. Thus was the altar made and placed…

… and the sacred place was the point within the centre of the circle, as we of old times have been taught, that the point within the centre is the origin of all things. Therefore should we adore it.”

Kiss Priestess on her yoni, or picture kissing the Goddess there if doing the rite as a solitary.

“Therefore, whom we adore, we also invoke, by the power of the lifted lance. O circle of stars [kiss], whereof our Father is but the younger brother [kiss], Marvel beyond imagination, soul of infinite space, before whom time is ashamed, the mind bewildered and understanding dark, not unto thee may we attain unless thine image be of love. [Kiss]

Therefore, by seed and root, and stem and bud and leaf and flower and fruit do we invoke thee,

O, Queen of space, O dew of light, O continuous one of the Heavens [kiss]. Let it be ever thus, that men speak not of Thee as one, but as none, and let them not speak of thee at all, since thou art continuous, for thou art the point within the circle [kiss], which we adore [kiss], the fount of life without which we would not be” [kiss].

And in this way truly are erected the Holy Twin Pillars Boaz and Joachim [kisses breasts]. In beauty and strength were they erected, to the wonder and glory of all men.

O Secrets of secrets that art hidden in the being of all lives. Not thee do we adore, for that which adoreth is also thou. Thou art that and That am I” [kiss].

I am the flame that burns in every man, and in the core of every star [kiss].
I am Life and the giver of Life, yet therefore is the knowledge of me the Knowledge of Death
[kiss].
I am alone, the Lord within ourselves whose name is Mystery of Mysteries
[kiss].

Altar of mysteries manifold,
The sacred Circle’s secret point
Thus do I sign thee as of old,
With kisses of my lips anoint
[kiss lips].

Open for me the secret way,
The pathway of intelligence,
Beyond the gates of night and day,
Beyond the bounds of time and sense.
Behold the mystery aright
The five true points of fellowship….”

If doing as symbolic: Lower athame into juice. If doing actual form, penetrate yoni of Priestess with lingham.

“Here where Lance and Grail unite,
And feet, and knees, and breast, and lip.

Encourage our hearts, Let thy Light crystallize itself in our blood, fulfilling us of Resurrection, for there is no part of us that is not of the Gods.”

Ritual

(Ritual and spells here.)

Raising Power

Hold wand.

Point wand to east air candle.

“Air to vitalize it.”

Point wand to south fire candle.

“Fire to purify it.”

Point wand to west water candle.

All now dance in circle around the circle.

“Ecko, Ecko Azerak,
Ecko, Ecko Zomelak,
Ecko, Ecko Freyr,
Ecko, Ecko Freyja.
Ecko, Ecko Azerak,

Darksome Night and Shining Moon
Balance of the dark and light,
hearken ye our Witch’s Rune,
as we perform our sacred rite!
With earth and water, air and fire,
by blade and bowl and circle round,
we come to you with our desire:
let all that is hidden now be found!
With censor, candle, book and sword,
and ringing of the altar bell,
we tie a knot within our cord
to bind our magic in a spell.
Mother of the summer fields,
goddess of the silver moon,
join with us as power builds!
dance with us our witch’s rune!
Father of the Summer dew
Hunter of the winter snows
With open arms we welcome you!
Dance with us as power grows!
By all the light of moon and sun,
by all the might of land and sea,
chant the rune and it is done.
As we will, so mote it be!
Ecko, Ecko Azerak,
Ecko, Ecko Zomelak,
Ecko, Ecko Freyr,
Ecko, Ecko Freyja.
Ecko, Ecko Azerak,

Ecko, Ecko Freyr,
Ecko, Ecko Freyja.
Ecko, Ecko Azerak,
Ecko, Ecko Zomelak,
Ecko, Ecko Freyr,
Ecko, Ecko Freyja.”

Release the energies as a cone of power.

Cakes and Ale

If you didn’t do symbolic Great Rite: Put the chalice on the pentacle and hold athame over it and lower it into the chalice while saying:

“As this athame is the male, so this cup is the female, and joined they bring blessings.”

Raise the chalice high over the altar and say:

“To Freyja! To Freyr! To all divine beings, fairies, and spirits whom have assisted me in my ritual and magick. I make this offering in thanks!”

Pour some of the drink into the offering bowl, and drink the rest, passing it around with anyone else present.

(optional cakes offering)

Place plate of cakes on the pentacle. Take the athame and press the tip of it to the cakes. Say:

“Freyja bless this food. May it bestow health, strength, joy, and peace (or whatever else you wish), and that fulfillment of love which is perfect happiness.”

Raise the plate of cakes over the altar and say:

“To Freyja! To Freyr! To all divine beings, fairies, and spirits whom have assisted me in my ritual and magick. I make this offering in thanks!”

Put some of the cake into the offering bowl, and eat the rest, passing it around with anyone else present.

Closing the Circle

Face north.

“Freyja! I thank you for your presence and your gift of magick.
Depart to thy realms if you must, stay if you will.
Depart with my blessings and love
and my promise to seek pleasure and beauty,
as you have charged.”

“Blessed be!”

“I bid you hail and farewell.”

“Freyr! I thank you for your presence,
and your gift of abundance and vitality.
Depart to thy realms if you must, stay if you will.
Depart with my blessings and love
and my promise to live life with joy and energy,
as you have charged.”

“Blessed Be!”

“I bid you hail and farewell.”

Bring the the athame with.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the East, Lords of the Air, I thank you for attending my rites and protecting my Circle. As you depart to your pleasant and lovely realms, I bid you hail and farewell.”

Poke center of pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the South, Lords of Fire, I thank you for attending my rites and protecting my Circle. As you depart to your pleasant and lovely realms, I bid you hail and farewell.”

Poke center of pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the West, Lords of Water, Lords of Death and Initiation, I thank you for attending my rites and protecting my Circle. As you depart to your lovely realms, I bid you hail and farewell.”

Poke center of pentagram.

“Lords of the Watchtowers of the North, Lords of Earth, guardians of the Northern portals, powerful God and gentle Goddess, I thank you for attending my rites and protecting my Circle. As you depart to your pleasant and lovely realms, I bid you hail and farewell.”

Poke center of pentagram.

Use the candle snuffer to put out the God, Goddess, and all quarter candles. Then put out the fire candle. Last put out the Presence Candle.

Cut the athame across the invisible circle and then move counterclockwise, sucking the circle energy back into the athame.

Place hands upon the rituals tools and the altar and push any extra energy into the the tools and altar.

Say:

“The circle is cut, but the blessings long remain. Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again. Blessed be!”

Os is OM

Os (Ansuz), the Heathen rune of connecting to God (Odin) as word is the same as Om (AUM), the eastern spiritual (Hindu/Buddhuist/etc) idea of God as sound!

Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Signs

hex signPennsylvania Dutch Hex Signs are a form of old folk magick based on runic magick, but in a form that was created by German immigrants. They are used on barns and other buildings as a way to bring in good luck, protection, and positive energies. They are talked about in the book, Northern Magic, by Edred Thorsson. Wikipedia has more info on them. In Pennsylvania there survives a form of fold magick called Pow-wow. Many elements of Pow-wow magick hint back to older forms of northern magick, as that is it’s roots going back. You can buy hex signs from a place called Jacob Zook.

Seidr

I don’t practice seidr, it is actually considered to be women’s form of magick and not something that is encouraged for men to practice, but still I do like to know about it, since I love learning about all forms of magick and practice.

Here is some good information about it:

Women and Magic in the Sagas: Seiðr and Spá

The return of the Volva

Spaecraft Seidr and Shamanism

Common Modern Folk Practices that are Heathen in Origin

1 Tooth-Faerie – Done as a sacrifice to honor the Alfar & Frey, there king, in thanks for the growth of the kids teeth to come.

2 Christmas-Tree – Actually a Yule practice to represent Yggdrasil. The ornaments are sacrifices made to the gods. Probably (maybe; just a theory) also given to appease Odin and the wild hunt. Notice how many ornaments are human like? Maybe this was so the wild hunt would take these symbolic people instead of real people.

3 Wishing-Well (Fountain) – Is a magickal practice used to place something into the 3 sacred wells (Hvergelmir, Wyrd, Mimir) so that it may manifest into ones Wyrd. Like as an example. If one wanted a car they could toss a matchbox car into a body of water while wishing for a new car and picturing what kind of car they want (and the tiny toy car should be one that reflects this model).

4 Piggy-Bank – Represents Frey’s golden Boar. Frey is the god of fertility and abundance (which is associated with money in modern times).

5 Drinking-Toasts – This is merely the modern survival of the sumbel ritual.

Lessor Hallowing Ritual of the Hammer (LHRH)

This is a spiritual exercise to be done every day or even if wanted more then once a day. The purpose of this ritual is many-fold. It helps to clear the energies of an area and drive away away negative energies which may be present. It also sets up a powerful field of protection on the doer that lasts for awhile. It banishes any negative energies that may be at work on the doer. As well it invokes spiritual energy from the World-Tree Yggdrasil, as well as spiritual energy from the runes if that optional runic part is done, into the one doing the ritual. All told this is a very useful ritual to do on a everyday basis. No other opening or closing ritual is needed for this.

Optionally you can use a wand for this ritual or if not can just use your fingers, using the first two fingers as pointer fingers like a sort of finger wand. You should use your right hand.

-The Ritual-

Start by facing east. Picture in your minds eye over your head a powerful white light energy. Reach up with your wand or fingers and draw this ball of energy with your wand and touch your forehead and loudly call out in a galdr (chanting) tone:

“ASGARD!”

Briefly now touch your heart area and then point your wand or fingers down towards the floor and loudly call out in galdr:

“MIDGARD!”

Now touch your right shoulder:

“MUSPELHEIM!”

Touch your left shoulder:

“NIFLHEIM!”

Now bring both hands together like a prayer pose at your heart, the wand can be between the hands:

“ALFHEIM”

Make a Hammer Sign to the east:

“Thor Hallow!”

Make a Hammer sign to the south:

“Thor Hallow!”

Now make a Hammer sign to the west:

“Thor Hallow!”

Make a Hammer sign to the north:

“Thor Hallow!”

Face again east and extend both hands outward and hold them this was for the next parts.:

In a chanting voice:

“Hail Odin who is before me.”

“Hail Freyja who is behind me. ”

“Hail Thor who is on my right. ”

“Hail Freyr who is on my left.”

“For about me flames Mjolnir.”

“And in the column stands the great tree, Yggdrasil”

Now we repeat the first part:

See the light above your head and draw it down and touch your forehead with the wand or fingers:

“ASGARD”

Briefly touch your heart area and then point your wand or fingers down towards the floor:

“MIDGARD!”

Touch your right shoulder:

“MUSPELHEIM!”

Touch your left shoulder:

“NIFLHEIM!”

Bring both hands together like a prayer pose at your heart, the wand between the hands:

“ALFHEIM”

-(Optional rune ring invoking)-

At this point now stand facing north and now start with the first rune Fehu while facing north and each rune turn an 1/8th turn. This should make for 3 circles as you chant all 24 runes. If you don’t know how to properly pronounce the runes then you can learn how to pronounce them at this page, or skip this part as it is optional anyways.

Face north and trace the rune shape in the air before you using your wand and loudly chant: “FEHU!”

Fehu

-Grounding-

This last part is not optional. It is important to always ground after any ritual. One simple way to do this, is picture a ball of light over your head, and let this ball of light slowly descend into your body. As it does let it take with it any excess, negative, old, and/or unneeded energies. Let this ball of light descend all the way down through you till it gets to your feet and then let it drop into the floor and keep going into the Earth, taking all the unneeded energies with it to be recycled by the Earth. Not grounding after every ritual can have very adverse effects about you in the long run, even in the short term can have bad results so always ground after all rituals. Another common way to ground is to picture yourself as a tree and see yourself having roots that grow into the Earth. Also after any major ritual you can eat a little food as a way to ground too. But for this daily ritual eating as a way to ground is not a good way to go unless you time the doing of this ritual for right before one of your normal meals.

Feel free to copy and use this ritual so long as you acknowledge the source.

What is Heathenism?

What is Heathenism?

Heathenism is a religion that honors the ancient Norse, Anglo-Saxon, or Germanic gods and goddesses. These are the same gods and goddesses that the Vikings and pre-Vikings worshiped. It is a religion open to anyone who feels a closeness to such gods and goddesses.

How Does One Follow Heathenism?

“The mind alone knows what is nearest the heart…. Each man is his own judge” {Havamal}

Heathenism is a very individualistic path and there are about as many ways to practice it as there are people who practice it. You will find many conflicting ideas about what Heathens believe (the only thing Heathens tend to agree on is that they worship the Norse, Anglo-Saxon, or Germanic gods and goddesses). One follows Heathen by being close in their heart, to one or more of the Norse, Saxon, or Germanic gods and goddesses.

What are Some Variations of Heathenism?

Other terms used to describe variations of, or traditions similar to Heathenism, are Asatru, Vanatru, Odinism, Theodism, Norse-Paganism, and various other more obscure traditions. Asatru is fairly much another way to say Heathenism, though some may consider it a bit more specialized in some aspects. Vanatru tends to focus more on the Vanir, the group of gods and goddesses who are more concerned with nature and fertility. Odinism tends to focus more so on Odin as the leader or head of the gods/goddesses. Theodism is a form of Heathenism which focuses on the Anglo-Saxon aspect of the gods/goddesses and it tends to have a very tribal hierarchal structure to it. People who like to label their practice as Norse-Paganism tend to take a more loose interpretation on rituals and ways of thinking about and honoring the gods/goddesses, or perhaps they prefer to relate more to the general Neo-Pagan scene than to the Heathen scene. Some Norse-Pagans tend to be a bit more into Wicca than Heathenism or like to mix both together in some sense. Even there are some people who consider themselves Norse-Wiccan, but that falls outside of the scope of what can be considered Heathenism or related to Heathenism.

How Do You Worship?

The most common ritual is called a blot. In this ritual one normally offers drinks such as mead, beer, or fruit-juice to a god or goddess. Sometimes one may instead offer other drinks such as milk, spring water, or sometimes some type of food, or any other gift. There are various days which are holy in Heathenism.

The idea is to build a bond of friendship between the gods and goddesses and the worshiper. That is the form of relationship one seeks within Heathenism with their deities. Not that of bowing down or lessening oneself like in many other religions. A common important theme in Heathenism is that of giving and being given in return. Heathenism puts strong importance on balance and fairness in one’s dealings. Always being truthful is very important. And giving back in equalness to what another gives to us.

Another form of ritual is called a Sumbel. This is more free form and open-ended. This is a group-only ritual in which one passes a drinking horn of fruit juice around and each person gets to toast to whichever deity they want. Also sometimes in this one makes a vow to perform some action, or toasts to an ancestor or person they hold in high regard (living or dead).

Do You Believe in Magick?

Many Heathens practice a related form of magick. There are two common systems. The Heathen cosmology is very magickal in nature. Some people practice both of these magickal systems. Some people just one. Even some people practice no magick at all.

One is based on the writing, carving, and chanting of special magickal symbols called runes. Runes are very potent. Each rune has a name that can be chanted in a special way called Galdoring. Also traditionally one would carve the symbol itself into wood. Nowadays people tend to write them with other materials and techniques as well. Odin is the god in charge of this magickal system.

The other magickal system is very shamanistic in nature. It is called Seidh. It is maybe not as popular as the runic magickal system since it is not as easy to actually practice. It involves trances and inner journey work. Sometimes there are tantric-like sexual practices. Freya is the goddess in charge of this magickal system.

Please Tell About Your Gods/Goddesses

There are many gods and goddess in Heathenism. Many have slightly different variations of their names based upon the exact culture and time period one is connecting to. Some deities have a lot of nicknames and aliases. Here are some of the deities of the Heathen religion.

Odin/Óðinn/Woðanaz/Woden/Wodan/Wuotan/Wodans

Odin is Allfather. He was the first god–the creator of man and all the nine worlds. He is always seeking knowledge and magickal powers. He is the one who discovered the runes when he hung himself from the world tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nine nights. He has one eye, as he sacrificed one of his eyes to take a drink from the well of Mimir (thus increasing his knowledge). He has two ravens and two wolves as pets. The two ravens Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory) fly forth each day to gather information about happenings in all the nine worlds. He keeps half those who have died in battle in his hall, Valhalla. He tends to like to stir up battle amongst men so he can receive more warriors to his abode. He is a master of disguise and loves to travel the nine worlds pretending to not be himself. He probably has more aliases and nicknames then any other deity. He loves to seduce women even though he is married to Frigga. His favorite color is blue. Wednesdays are sacred to him.

Thor/Thórr/Thunor/Donar/Thunars/Thunaraz

Thor is a big well-muscled fellow with red hair and beard. He is the protector of the gods and men from the frost giants (forces of destruction). He has a quick temper, but a big heart. He has a powerful weapon called Mjollnir (Thor’s Hammer). Many Heathens wear a representation of this hammer around their neck as protective pendant. Thor’s Hammer is a magickal tool used for blessing and protection. Whenever Thor throws his hammer it comes back to him (like a boomerang). The Thor’s Hammer represents phallic might. It has potent fertility power. Thor is always going off to the east to fight the giants. He has a flying wagon pulled by two goats. His wife is Sif. His favorite color is red. Thursdays are sacred to him.

Freya/Freyja/Freo/Frawi/Fraujon

Freya is the most magickally oriented goddess! She is very beautiful and well sought after by many beings but she remains single. It is said she once had a mate who vanished. She has many lovers in all the nine worlds. She has a magickal falcon cloak that allows her to fly through all the nine worlds. She practices a powerful form of magick called seidh. This is a type of sexual shamanism. She comes from the very wealthy Vanir side of things. The gods are divided between the Aesir and Vanir groups. Long time ago both sides fought a war, but later on settled and formed a truce. Now they act as one group. Freya has a very firie type of energy. Fire and gold were associated together to the ancient Norse. She has a magickal necklace called Brisingamen. Her tears turn to amber. Gold is her favorite color. Fridays are sacred to her.

Frey/Freyr/Frea/Fro/Frauja/Fraujaz/Fro Ing

Frey is ancestral King of Sweden. He is the brother of Freya. He has very potent male sexual might and is often depicted with a constant erection. This shows his intense fertile powers. As such he is very connected to material abundance. He is the god of peace and plenty. Though also a good warrior when the need arises. King of the Light Alfs (elves). He is very nature oriented, as are all the Vanir. His sacred animal is the boar and he has a golden one as pet, called Gullinbursti.

Tyr/Tiw/Ziu/Teiws/Tiwaz

The god of justice, order, structure. He is a warrior and always fights with honor. He sacrificed one hand in order to bind the dangerous wolf, Fenrir. So he has only a stump where one of his hands was. Some say he used to be the sky father before Odin took over. Tuesdays are sacred to him.

Idun/Iðunn

She is the keeper of the golden apples of youth that keep the gods from aging. She is connected to health and long life. Once she was kidnaped and all the gods aged and got very weak til she was recovered.

Loki

Few worship Loki (except maybe on April Fools Day, or when worshiping Odin, since Odin swore to only accept an offering if Loki get’s a share as well). He is the god of disorder, chaos, and playing tricks on people. He is always creating bad situations for the gods. But he is always also getting them out of the bad situations. He helps create change and growth by creating challenge, so he is useful despite his negative aspects. He is always somewhat of a double agent and unpredictable and likes to play both sides against each other. Later on he turned actually evil, but was more of a mischief maker earlier. It was after he arranged to have Balder killed that he turned to the “dark side”. The mistletoe is sacred to him.

Balder

A god loved by all for his peacefulness and generally lovableness. He is the most handsome of all the male gods. His mother Frigga made all creatures swear an oath that they would never cause him harm (except she forgot the mistletoe). Later on Loki set Hodur (a minor blind god) up to throw a mistletoe dart at him. All the gods had been having sport of the fact that nothing could harm Balder and thus would spend all day tossing stuff at him and watching it bounce harmlessly off of him. Anyways the dart killed Balder instantly. They tried to fetch him from out of Hel (land of the dead, peaceful place of rest, nothing like the Christian Hell with two Ls) but Hel (the goddess in charge of Hel) would not release him. There he shall remain til after Ragarak. His favorite color is white.

Frigga/Frigg/Fricg/Frige/Frija/Frijjo

Wife to Odin, and mother to Balder. She knows all things but does not speak of them. She is very much connected to all things maternal and to motherly duties. The perfect wife type.

I’d Like to Learn More!

A good place to start is to read as many books on Heathenism and the Norse gods and goddesses as possible. The most important text of all are the Eddas (both poetic and prose form). Also any books that tell about the story of the gods are great to read. Heathenism is a religion that requires much pondering and deciding what makes sense to you. It’s not a packaged type religion like most where you are told what you can and can’t do and everything is spelled out for you. It’s a religion for thinkers and individualists! Of course this is not to say that there are not plenty of groups out there with their own (very strongly held) ideas about what Heathenism is, as there are plenty! But the best place is to start on your own. Once you have decided for yourself what Heathenism means to you then you can search for a group of like-minded people if it’s your desire to be part of a group! Many Heathenism practice alone. Some get together at times with other close Heathen friends to celebrate.
